One of the continual bits of junk email we all receive are those attempting to trick us into giving up our personal information. These are called phishing scams.
They can appear to be from your bank, Pay-Pal, your ISP (HiWAAY) or any other business. They can include promises of wealth, lottery winnings, security threat warnings or maintenance alerts. All these email messages are fake. Their goal is to steal your personal information. They may give you a link to go to or just ask you to respond to the email. Don't do it!
No legitimate business will ever ask you for usernames, passwords or private account information via email. HiWAAY will never send you an email asking for your username or password. If you receive one of these emails, it came from a thief.
The best way to handle phishing scam email is to forward a copy to junk@hiwaay.net and then delete the message.
A healthy amount of skepticism is a good thing when using the Internet.
