Domain Transfer Q & A

What does 'Transfer Registrar' mean? Transfer Registrar transfers your domain name from your old registrar (Network Solutions for example) to HiWAAY.net's Registrar as your official registrar of record. Some people make the Transfer when the domain name is up for renewal. Other people do it before that date to ensure there are no problems when the renewal time comes. If you transfer your registrar, the Transfer Registrar fee of $20.00, includes an addition of 12 months to the term of your domain name registration. After your first year is complete you will be able to renew at HiWAAY.net. NOTE: If you wait until after the expiration date, the current registrar may not allow the domain name transfer. It is best to transfer your domain name(s) well ahead of the expiration date.

What is a Registrar Transfer? A registrar transfer is the act of moving a domain name from one domain name registrar to another. For example, you might move your domain name from your current registrar to HiWAAY.net to take advantage of our stability or customer support.

What is a domain name registrar? A domain name registrar is the organization or company responsible for providing domain name registration services to the public. A domain name registrar is either authorized by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, an organization dedicated to Internet governance) to provide registration services for the .com, .net and .org global top-level domain names, or is authorized by its respective government to register domain names within a specific ccTLD (country code Top Level Domain name extension). CIRA provides this function in Canada. A registrar must also be authorized by the registry of a Top Level Domain to act as an agent of the registry to process domain name registrations, where the agent is not a reseller. The registrar is also responsible for creating and maintaining a WHOIS database for its customers.

Why would I Transfer Registrars? The most common reason we hear from people is dissatisfaction with the current registrar. Sometimes, it is as simple as taking advantage of our high level of customer service and security; both of which can be lacking in other registrars.

How does it work? Once you submit a Transfer Registrar request we send e-mail notification to the administrative contact of the domain name that must acknowledge and reply. Once that is done, we notify the central registry of the transfer. The central registry then notifies the current registrar. The current registrar then has five days to accept or deny the transfer. If it is accepted, the domain name is transferred and the domain name is entered into our Whois database. The administrative contact is notified by e-mail of the completion, and Tucows, Inc (HiWAAY.net's Registrar) is now your official registrar.

How long will it take to complete the Transfer? The process can be as quick as two days or as long as two weeks. The time varies because it is dependent on the speed of the administrative contact to do their part (see above) as well as the current registrar to accept or deny the transfer.

Will there be any disruption to my web site or e-mail when I transfer registrars? No. Your web site and e-mail services will not be affected. The transfer does not affect the DNS information, associated with a domain name at the time of transfer. The DNS may be modified after your domain name has been successfully transferred to HiWAAY.net, if you have chosen to host your web site and/or e-mail with us.

My Transfer Registrar request was denied. Why? Reasons can vary:

HiWAAY.net is not told exactly why a Change Registrar is denied so it is definitely in your best interest to check with your current registrar if a Registrar Transfer is denied.

The administrative contact for my domain name is invalid. How can I make a Transfer Registrar request if the authorization goes to an invalid email address? For your security and to ensure only valid Change Registrar requests are processed, HiWAAY.net must get authorization from the administrative contact of the domain name in question. If this email address is invalid, you should contact the current registrar to update the administrative contact information. Once this is achieved, you can attempt to Transfer Registrars.

What is an "Authcode"? A transfer authorization code is required when transferring any .org, .info, .biz, .us, .name and .cn domain name from one registrar to another. The transfer authorization code is created at the time of registration and can be obtained from the current registrar for the domain

What if I can't transfer from my current Registrar? You can still host with HiWAAY. You will need to request a Domain Name Server (DNS) Change from your current Registrar. DNS TRANSFER IS NOT A REGISTRAR TRANSFER. It’s to modify the name server setting associated with that domain name. To do this, you will need to login to your current domain name Registrar's domain manager interface (if you do not know who that is, you can use our domain name whois lookup to find out who to contact) and modify the name server settings directly with them.

You must register the following Primary and Secondary Name Servers before we can host your domain:

Primary Name Server: ns1.hiwaay.net
Secondary Name Server: ns2.hiwaay.net
